hi,my daughter is 9 yrs old her sore throat and dry cough started 6 days ago on the second day I gave her advil for the relief and the third day I gave her benylin for her cough and colds. she is feeling bit better now still has a bit of sore and cough. Her last dose of benylin is today. she is drinking a lot of warm water with pure honey and lemon. but sometimes there is blood on her phlem or spit, but she can eat well maybe because of pain relief should I continue her benylin for cough and advil for her sore throat? - Lynn

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Lynn,
Thanks for the query. I understand your query.Dry cough without sputum Or fever seems to be allergic in nature.
Your treatment is having temporary control on allergy & pain.. there is also possibility of insufficient dose ( decided by doctor depending on age, gravity of symptoms & weight of patient.
Also long standing allergy also brings about increase in certain blood cells( Eosinophils ).. & these cells need to be lowered for controlling long time dry cough.
Other causes of increase in Eosinophils ( eczema, worm infestation )need to be evaluated for & treated accordingly.& infection also needs to be excluded.
So you should better consult a pediatrician/ chest physician for proper evaluation & cause specific treatment.
* Let her continue with the drugs. Avoid cold, oily & spicy food/ avoid exposure to dust, fumes, smoke. Let her do hot saline gargles .. till she sees the doctor.
Thanks.
